Photographer, Dane Shitagi, has been capturing the hearts
and souls of ballerinas through the use of photos for fifteen years. The
majority of the ballerinas he has in his project have danced with top companies
such as American Ballet Theater, New York City Ballet, Dresden Semperopera Ballet, Staatsballet Berlin, and Pacific Northwest
Ballet. He sometimes photographs ballerinas that are currently still in school.
When Shitagi first
began the Ballerina Project he used only traditional film and cameras. Starting
in 2012, he began to include digital photography. The Ballerina Project has one
of the largest networks of followers in the world for ballet related pages on
Instagram and Facebook.
Having a background
in ballet, I personally think his photography is beautiful. Shitagi photographs
ballerinas doing ballet in everyday life. This is not very typical of
photographers. Some of the ballerinas in his photos are wearing regular
clothing or doing regular activities, such as waiting for the subway in NYC. I
think his photography tries to capture the person behind the ballet character
on stage.
If you have a
background or interest in ballet, you should definitely take a look at the
Ballet Project’s Instagram page. I always love seeing peers that I danced with
on this page. One is pictured below.
